We have two heath little baby chicks. Alvin, he's the black and yellow/white one and the other, Bernadette, Bernie for short. Sadly, Sally passed away a couple days after hatching.

We brought them in to keep a good eye on them. We also brought Jasmine in to get her healthy again. Birthing babies can take a lot out of a woman... I mean hen.

They are so cute... when they are sleeping! They are like little bottled up of energy fuzz balls.

These pictures were taken of them last week. I'll get new pictures of Alvin and Bernie this week.

Life on a very small farm

A bunch has been going on this summer. We've got good news and sad news. The sad first, Blanche passed away on July 29th and we will miss her very much. Second, we also lost Brian's giant pumpkin plant. The one thing I don't think I'll get use to, loss.

On the good side, in the garden, we may have lost the giant pumpkin but gained a whole garden of veggies! Brian planted about a month and a half ago... corn, tomatoes, more peppers, eggplant, radishes, bean, peas, squash, spinach, orka and a Cinderella pumpkin plant. Here are the "kids" enjoy their time in the garden. Brian uses them as a organic way of getting rid of insects... it works!

We've already got corn growing...

I'm guessing it's time to introduce the new Seehafer Farm babies...

This is Jasmine (in remembrance of Jazz). She is the only one who's light yellow. Jasmine's personality is pretty passive, not a troublemaker.

This one is Duckie. Brian named her this because she absolutely loves playing in the water! Duckie has darker markings in her wing feathers.

This one is Rowdy... she is her namesake. Rowdy is the littlest one and SHE IS A TROUBLEMAKER!

And last but not least, this little man (we think) is Nigel. He is always getting the girls in a uproar, another troublemaker.

It just might be me but I don't remember the other girls being very high energy. These little new ones don't stop and if they do, it's only a moment of quiet before all heck breaks lose again!

We love the new babies and they are a great addition to the farm.

Sad news, Jazz passed away yesterday at 5:51pm with all of us around her. We cried and buried her right next to J.D. She won't be lonely up in heaven.

Prayers Needed for Jazz

This is Jazz and how we came about her is a long story. She is a rescue baby chick. Yesterday we had some dear friends come by, Anita and Dennis. On their way home they stopped by Petsmart for dog food for their "kids." At Petsmart was a lady that found this baby chick in her yard. She had no idea where it came from and no idea how to care for it. Without hesitation, Anita called us!

Without even thinking about it, we jump into the Seehafer Farm mini-van to the rescue! A BABY CHICK NEEDS OUR HELP!!!

As soon as we got her home, we got her body temperature up and try her to get to drink water, she was not doing that on her own very much. Jazz (we named her in memory of Dennis and Anita's wonder dog that passed away last year - Jazz was a wonderful dog!) was crying a bunch so I put a couple of stuffed animals in there for comfort and warmth... which believe it or not... WORKED! All night Brian and I were checking on her and the tempature of the baby roost. It was still touch and go with Jazz not drink water on her own.

We came up with a bright idea and as soon as it was 8am in the morning, we headed to Garr's (in Mount Juliet) and bought Jazz four new Bantam brothers and sisters (not sure what we have - straight run.)

Jazz is actually drinking water now with them and sleeping hard with her new siblings. We still need prayers for this little one. Jazz is not out of the woods yet.

Nothing like adding new "kids" to a house hold... breathes new life into it.

The winds last night were just... windy! It was actually windy all day yesterday. We were blessed here to have all our trees to remain upright this morning. Some near by counties in Tennessee had lots of trees come down last night. Thankfully, the news reports that no one got hurt.

Remembering Bubba

I'll try to catch up everyone on Brian's giant pumpkin.

Here's the start and preparation for the pumpkin. Brian places plastic on the soil to warm it up. Brian uses one of my meat thermometer to keep track of the tempature.

While we're waiting for everything to warm up, Brian starts growing the plant. This year, the spare bedroom closet is the incubator.

Brian named the pumpkin plant "Bubba" this year.

Brian also built this great wind-breaker...

The young pumpkin plant is very vulnerable to wind and heavy rain... which we are getting a bunch of.

This is Bubba earlier today. Bubba is outgrowing his windbreaker and Brian is thinking about making a add-on. The plant still needs protection from the weather until the vine grows out and establishes roots to anchor it down.

It's official, "Pumpkin Time" is on!

It's the sixth day after surgery and my hands are doing great. They're not falling asleep anymore and I'm not having to shake them awake! Also, the feeling in my thumbs are coming back but... I'm thinking I shouldn't be typing right now... hee hee!

Everything is going good here. The girls are happy and healthy...

and out in the mud today. I was thinking about putting this little picnic table in our antique booth but when I mentioned it to them, Blanche gave me a "look"...

Restless Night

This is what the moon looked like at 2:27am this morning. I haven't been sleeping much lately because I have a bad case of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. As a matter of fact, I am having surgery on both wrists tomorrow. I'll be out of commission for at least two weeks.

Brian and I did have a chance this past weekend to hit the road in search for the future "Seehafer Farm." We got in the truck with four farms to look at towards the north and before we knew it...

we were in Franklin Kentucky!

It's absolutely beautiful up there. Farmland as far as the eye can see. Brian loved it there...

but no luck yet. We're still looking.

Forgive me if I come of angry in this today's blog but I really am.

It's been about a month now when William Jake's injury happened. I noticed him limping one day but it was random... sometimes he did and sometimes he didn't. I watched him for about a couple of days and he started getting worse. William and I made an appointment to see the crew at Vetmed, loaded up in the "farm-bus" (mini-van) and headed out. After Dr. Harris and Dr. Gables did some careful looking, we found out he's got a growth on his joint which is possibly causing the pain (maybe it might be from a old injury, we're watching it) BUT also noticed what started this all... here's the part where I'm angry... William Jake was shot with a pellet gun!!!!! The pellet is still in him, too close to a main artery for surgery. He also has a rib that is broken in two places. My guess on the rib is either that he was kicked or feel when he got shot.

YES, I'M VERY MAD!! Here's the part where you can mark my words, I will find out who did this and get kind of Italian revenge... not really but I will find out who did this.

I did some of my own investigating (I LOVE watching shows like NCIS, CSI and Law & Order... and not to mention The Sopranos...wink, wink), talking with neighbors, foot work around the area, constant questioning of William (he's not talking about it) and have come up with a suspect. Don't think I'm not going to let this lie. I've also found out that this certain suspect has done this before to another neighbor's pet. I just need to get proof now, that, or talk to his mom and dad.

William Jake has been resting and healing nicely, inside the house with us. He's getting use to the "house cat" life.

It's still up in the air if he's going back out. My vote is no.

On a personal note, Brian and I moved the antique booth to Rare Bird Antiques in Goodlettsville Tennessee.

Joan (the owner), Michelle, Lisa, Dot, Linda and Matt (the crew) are AWESOME!! I probably haven't met everyone, so forgive me if I missed anyone.

All the booths are filled with wonderful antiques. I've got a bunch to learn from the experts there.

Sorry for the absence, lots of news to tell. I will update everyone on what's going on here at Seehafer Farm when I get more time later. Most important, Bubba is still with us and doing good. We are blessed every day we get to spend with him.

Next, Brian is preparing the soil for the giant pumpkin!! We have taken the house off the market for right now but will not give up on the search for dream farm.

I'll be sure to not leave anything out on the next blog.

Again, I apologize for not doing the blog daily. Everything is good here. We are still looking for the farm but nothing yet.

Bubba is doing well. His appetite has not changed, he's a bottomless pit! He's always under foot if I'm in the kitchen... and yes, he gets spoiled! We love that Bubba man.

The girls are also doing well. They now come out of the roost to walk around yard but only if Brian or I are in the yard with them. Today was just a beautiful day (I think it reached 60 degrees) that they took a dirt bath for the first time this year. I sat down next to them for a moment, while they were bathing, to soak up some sun myself!

I have a confession to make, I have a chair fetish. Yes, I LOVE CHAIRS! All kinds, large and small, wood or wicker, painted or stained, standard and rocking.

I have looked everywhere for the picture of this chair I took before I started sanding it but I have no idea where I put it on the computer! This very cute chair was painted solid white. I bought it at Southern Thrift for $3.99. I pictured painting it in my head a sweet pink but as I started to sand it, these wonderful colors started showing themselves...

This chair was painted a robin egg blue, next, a sage green and then a white.

I'm starting to think about not painting it pink. The chair looks very cool with the three colors showing. I just might finishing sanding it and putting a clear coat of polyurethane on it. It looks like it came right out of a farm house. I love that idea!

UPDATE:
By the way, Bubba, Angel and Trigger... the "Seehafer Senior Citizens" are all doing good and hanging in there. We're keeping a close eye on them and their doctors are being update on them twice a week. Dr. Nicole Harris, Dr. Scott Gables and the girls over at VetMed are just amazing! They are not only wonderful with everyones "kids" but with us humans too.

It's Part of Life

I'm so sorry for my absence these several days. Brian and I have been dealing with our "senior citizens" recently. Angel is doing good and Bubba, we are taking it one day at a time. Bubba's levels for his liver are not good. Dr. Harris at VetMed did a ultrasound and found masses within his spleen with possible metastasis to his liver. Dr. Harris consulted with a radiologist and Dr. Gables. While not able to confirm them tumors without surgery, they think it is cancer. Brian and I have decided not to do any surgery for Bubba. He is on medication, eating tons of food and getting kissed about thirty times an hour. Bubba will be 17 years old this year and Brian has given him a wonderful life and would like for him to be comfortable for whatever time we have left with him... Allison at VetMed calls it "bonus time"... that's a very good way of looking at it. Bubba is doing fine right now and is napping in front of me after he ate most of my Mushroom-Swiss Burger. If you're asking me, I think he's working the "sad eyes" pretty well, just joking, I really love that dog. Brian, I feel, will be the most affected by Bubba's passing. How do you let go of a good friend and family member that has been by your side, through thick and thin for 17 long years? Not very easily.

Please keep Bubba and Brian in your prayers.

Snow, Snow and More Snow

As I'm writing this, I turn to my left to look out the window and what do I see, snow... snow on the ground and snow falling from the sky. It's been like this for days. I'm not complaining, I'm just not use to it. The girls (Rose, Dorothy and Blanche) haven't yet come out since the Red-tailed Hawk episode but now I'm thinking it's the cold they don't like... and the Hawk, of course. They've been under their heating lamps staying warm. The girls have also been served their fresh fruits and veggie directly in their roost daily... yeah, Brian and I have suckers written on our foreheads.

Trigger (the rabbit) is doing good. Apparently, rabbits do good in the cold. His home is filled with warm straw that he throws into his wooden house. We fill his water every three to four hours because it freezes.

The turtles have been in hibernation for about a couple of months now. They are in the ground keeping warm. We won't see them till spring.

Right now we are dealing with Angel and Bubba. Last week we found out that Angel has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Bubba had some blood work done on Tuesday. It came back yesterday and some of his liver levels are off. We're going in today to do a ultrasound of his liver. Both Angel and Bubba are 17 years old and they are getting the best care here at home and at VetMed with Dr. Gable, Dr. Harris and the rest of the wonderful crew there. We are very thankful to them for all the care and support they give all of us.

And Then There was Three...

I've got very sad news, J.D. was attacked and killed by a Red-tailed Hawk late Friday afternoon.

When I got home, I noticed Rose and Dorothy under the deck but they were acting very strange. There was no sign of J.D. and Blanche. I took a quick look around the yard and no sign of the girls. Here's the honest truth, I started to panic a little. I ran around looking in the dog house, under the deck again and the garden area. By this time the Rose and Dorothy RAN into the roost and went straight inside which they NEVER, EVER DO. Just then, I went into BIG PANIC mode and started crying... some soon to be farmer, right?!?! Blanche all of a sudden came out of nowhere and ran straight for the roost too. Still no sign of J.D. I had this feeling of dread come over me. Just as I came up to the Willow tree and pond area, I saw feathers everywhere and then saw J.D. I called Brian immediately, crying. He was already on his way home from work and we buried her under the fruit trees in the garden. That night we brought Rose, Dorothy and Blanche in and took a closer look at them to make sure they were ok. They are fine physically but haven't come out the roost since Friday night.

On Saturday morning, our thought of a Red-tailed Hawk was confirmed by him (or her) swooping down for seconds. The hawk was about 4 to 5 feet wide with the wing span. I can see why the girls don't want to come out the roost. Brian and I now have a rule, the chickens don't come out unless we are out there with them in the yard.

We loved J.D. very much and will miss her.

Looking Back

I started looking back at all the pictures we've taken this year. We've had a full year.

Big Fluffy Dog Rescue found K.C. a wonderful family in Massachusetts. He is very happy, very healthy and very much loved by his new family.

Our great real estate agent, Micah Phillips sold my East Nashville home in April.

The beginning of May was Tennessee's worst nightmare. The flood affected thousands of people but with strong will and God's grace, we are rebuilding.

Here at the farm, we've lost special little ones... Katie...

Pumpkin... Joe (he's behind her)...

and Albert... They will always be missed.

The year 2010 is the year we started looking for the really "Seehafer Farm" and we hope to find our new home soon.

Thank you for all the support and love through the good and bad times. 2011 will be a good year fulled with new adventures.

Instead of throwing away the Christmas cards this year, recycle them! I think it's been years since I've bought "name tags" for presents.

I save the cards and cut off the cover of them using straight edge or design edge scissors. On the back, just write the "to's", "from's" and you even have room for a sweet Christmas message.

Decorate the present with matching ribbon and an ornament...

or with other "add ons"...

and fini! There you have a very creative way of wrapping and using recycled Christmas cards for decorating presents.

We're at PJ's Antique Mall in Mount Juliet. The place is run by Ruth and Ray (partners in business, not by marriage like I thought.) The mall has been around for 16 years.

It's filled top to bottom with great treasures of the past!

Wasn't Meant To Be

Brian and I had a bunch of things going on this weekend. We did get news Sunday from Micah (our real estate agent) that we did not get the farm in Cottontown, Tennessee.

We're sad but everything will be good. Life goes on and so does the search for the farm!

This is what we woke up to Saturday... SNOW!

I let Bubba and Tootie in to warm up their little feet. Tootie quickly found herself a warm spot... she squeezed herself between Brian and the couch. She looked quite comfy.

Cottontown, Tennessee

Brian and I have found a great farm. Smaller but very nice land. It's in Cottontown Tennessee, about 30 miles northeast of Nashville. We sent out a contract yesterday and found out that we are the fourth person(s) to go after this farm. It's a good price and there is a lot of house to work with. Right now they are asking for "your best and highest bid." We came up with an amount this morning that we're comfortable with. Brian and I made the decision that we will not go any higher. Brian said "If it was meant to be..." I'm glad one of us keeping our emotions intact, I couldn't sleep last night. We'll find out by Friday who gets the little farm.

Like Brian said... "if it was meant to be."

Farm Life

This would be the only part of farm life we don't like... yesterday morning, Albert and Pumpkin had to be put down. It was the only humane thing to do for them. They both had signs of Marek's Disease.

Monday evening after work we found Albert in the dog house. He was unable to walk. Albert had signs of paralysis on his left side. Brian notice on Saturday that he wasn't eatting as many minnows as he usually does but thought that he was just full. Sunday and Monday morning when I let him and the girls out, he was normal. There were no early signs that we saw. The disease hit Albert hard and fast.

On Pumpkin, we noticed her eye sight was getting progressively worse. In "The Chicken Health Handbook" page 286/287, DIAGNOSIS - symptoms (especially discolored iris and irregular pupil...distorted or blinded eye... We believe Pumpkin was blind in that eye with the irregular iris. Her feathers were not growing back and I also notice white bumps (tumors) near her back side. These are all signs of Marek's Disease.

Those two were the most photographed and story filled birds here at the Seehafer Farm. We will miss them deeply.

Video Man

Brian created the new job of camera man for Seehafer Farm. He'll be adding various videos of the "kids", farm adventures and giant pumpkins!

The first video: "Pumpkin Chasing BT" is about Brian's favorite girl, Pumpkin who loves to chase this squirrel who lives around our house somewhere. We can tell it's him by is short tail, hence the name BT, short for "Bobbed Tail." BT's entertainment is to annoy the girls and William Jake.

The second video: "Albert Showing Off For JD" is of Albert sliding down the hand rail of the back deck to get to his girl, JD! We actually thought he would fly down to her but why when you can look cool and slide down to your girl! Albert needs a little work on the "cool" part but he's doing great.

Enjoy the videos! There will be more to come by Brian, Seehafer Farm's camera man!

Brian made Albert a special box so he could have his own area in the roost. It's his very own "man cave" but recently we've been finding little white eggs in the "man cave." J.D. has moved into Albert's box!

Poor Albert, he gets no personal space. I think Brian knows how he feels. Poor Brian.

Taking Your Job Seriously

So, you're looking at this photo and thinking... "why is Angie showing us a picture of a tree?" Hmmm... well, if you look really carefully, in those branches there, Albert is amongst them!

Brian called out to me... "Angie, where's the camera?!?!? You're not going to believe this!" Brian grabbed the camera and took these shots of Albert. Brian said that he watched Albert come up the stairs onto the back deck (as usual), hop on the outside chair (still usual), fly/hop on the railing of the deck and fly up into the tree (not at all usual). Our guess is that Albert had to get to the highest place he can for the other roosters to hear him in the neighborhood. That kid takes his job pretty seriously.

The Wonderful Thing About Pets

Take notice of Albert up in the club house. Look behind Albert, that's Brian. He put Albert up there! I caught them both red handed!

Brian's Bratty Kid

This is the weekend routine with the "kids"... Brian heads out very early to get them their bucket of minnows and a small plastic cup of grubs for Albert... he gets minnows too.

When Brian gets home, they all get very excited. They start to follow Brian where ever he goes. Just for giggles, Brian walks around the yard with the "kids" following in line. It looks like a mama duck being followed by her baby ducks.

Albert loves spending time with Brian, especially with that little plastic cup in Brian's hand. Albert knows that there's something tasty in cup. This whole process lasts all day, getting fish breaks with the "kids." Then it starts all over again on Sunday morning.

Blanche and Pumpkin just wanted their picture taken. They look pretty happy, don't you think?!?! NOT!!!

It was Sunday morning, I looked out the screen door with my coffee in hand... "Morning Bubba. Morning Tootie. Morning Al?"

Albert had his breakfast, decided the dog bed on the deck looked quite comfortable and that is were he was going to take his morning nap. I'm beginning to think that he's confused about being a rooster. He thinks he's a dog... (insert eye-roll here) whatever.

Little Man is Growing Up

Yesterday morning I heard this weird sound come from the back yard. It sounded like a goose with laryngitis.

I walked out the back door onto the deck and Albert was just standing there. We stared at each other for a few seconds and...

he started to raise his neck, stick his little chest up and out, opened his mouth and crowed... or what sounded like a goose with laryngitis. I told him to keep practicing.
